CRT Production History 2010’s

2010 marked the revival of the Nutmeg Summer Series after an eight-year pause (2002–2009). The reboot features iconic musicals like Rent and Smokey Joe’s Café, alongside one-act comedies and a world premiere by Split Knuckle Theatre, all staged across two venues. The series evolved into a powerhouse festival by the end of the decade. By 2017, CRT continued the trend with titles like 1776, Noises Off, and Disney’s Newsies, solidifying Nutmeg as a summer theatrical destination. 2019 featured Mamma Mia! and Cabaret, further emphasizing strong musical programming aimed at both students and the broader community.

The 2014 production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable captured attention with Leslie Uggams starring as Mama Rose. It was both a celebrated return to classic musical theatre and a breakthrough in casting diversity, featuring the first African American actress in the role for a professional CRT production. CRT also started offering masterclasses, cabaret nights, workshops alongside mainstage offerings. The decade preserved CRT’s hallmark model: Equity-level productions alongside student performers, fostering real-world training in both acting and technical theatre across all seasons.
