1990s

From the 1998 production of The Maids, a wealthy blonde woman wearing a fur coat reaches for her sunglasses, held by a young maid.

CRT Production History 1990’s

The 1990s seasons blended musical classics with literary works, ensuring both entertainment and academic rigor. Productions included Cole, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well…, and Yours, Anne, reflecting CRT’s commitment to thoughtful, diverse programming. It continued to educate through practice, maintaining its mission of blending student learning with professional production.

In 1996, the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry (BIMP) was established—officially institutionalizing CRT’s puppetry legacy and preserving Frank Ballard’s vast collection of over 1,500 puppets and educational artifacts. BIMP’s founding transformed CRT’s contributions from active puppet productions into a public museum and academic resource, marking a major institutional milestone.

In 1998, CRT won multiple Connecticut Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding Musical for Man of La Mancha and Outstanding Set Design for The Miser.
