1970s

Wearing Elizabethan costumes, a young man woos a young woman in the 1978 production of Twelfth Night.

CRT Production History 1970’s

Between 1968 and 1970, the UConn campus—like many others across the United States—was energized by anti-war and civil rights activism. The Connecticut Repertory Theatre responded to this atmosphere of social change by programming works that engage with contemporary issues and supporting faculty-led initiatives. Playwright and faculty member Carlton Molette contributed significantly to this effort by bringing African American perspectives to the stage with productions such as Rosalee Pritchett (1970) and Booji (1971). These works enriched CRT’s repertoire with culturally diverse narratives and helped center voices that had historically been underrepresented in mainstream theatre, reflecting the company’s growing commitment to inclusive and socially conscious storytelling.

Throughout the 1970s, CRT solidified its identity as a regional repertory theatre, producing a subscription season of approximately six plays and musicals annually, like the models of Yale Rep or Hartford Stage. The theatre balanced professional Equity contracts—bringing in seasoned artists—with opportunities for advanced UConn students, supported by the Equity Candidacy Program. The Nutmeg Summer Series, CRT’s summer lineup established in the late 1950s, had grown into a fully professional (Equity) company by the 1970s, melding students and pros.

A gentleman donning an Elizabethan collar throws up his hands and takes a step back as if repulsed, in the 1978 production of Twelfth Night.
From the production of Threepenny Opera, a woman with short dark hair, wearing a striped skirt and fishnet stockings leans into a gentleman who holds her hips.
